EN 1860-2:2023 is the current European standard titled “Appliances, solid fuels and firelighters for barbecuing — Part 2: Barbecue charcoal and barbecue charcoal briquettes — Requirements and test methods.” It supersedes EN 1860-2:2005.
What the standard does
The standard sets requirements and test methods for barbecue charcoal and barbecue charcoal briquettes used in barbecue appliances. It is a technical reference, not a manufacturer, retailer or product brand approval.
Ask which edition applies
Legacy websites and packaging may still mention 2005. Request evidence against the edition required for the current market and date. A document should identify the standard edition and the product tested.
Separate evidence types
“Tested according to” can mean a method was used. “Conforms to” is a conclusion that requirements were met, which should be supported by the relevant evidence. An independent laboratory report identifies results and issuer. “DIN-certified” or “DINplus” imply separate authorization and must not be used simply because an EN or DIN EN test exists.
Verify product and sample scope
Check product name, raw material or grade, sample date, batch information, sampler, laboratory and report date. A report for one product cannot automatically be applied to a different formulation, raw material or finished format.
Connect the report to the specification
The buyer’s written specification may include additional physical, packaging or analytical criteria. The standard does not replace commercial agreement on dimensions, unit weight, breakage, pack weight or palletization.
Use careful website and packaging wording
Quote only the conclusion actually supported. Do not show DIN marks or certification language without current authorization. Keep the supporting report available for the relevant buyer review.
